Adriana Reyes-Lúa is a Research Scientist at SINTEF Energy Research in Trondheim, Norway. She holds a PhD and a MSc in Chemical Engineering, with focus on Process Systems Engineering, and a MSc in Manufacturing Engineering. She is currently co-managing the Horizon 2020 Project ACCSESS, aiming to develop replicable CCUS pathways in Europe. Besides having industrial experience, through several projects, she has worked on CO₂ capture, decarbonization of energy-intensive operations, energy efficiency, optimal operation, technology evaluation, hydrogen transport, and value chain techno-economic analysis.

How to roadmap? Basics and insights from German industry
Ali Aydemir is a researcher since 2013 and project manager in the Competence Centre Energy Technologies and Energy Systems at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI since 2017. His research areas include the qualitative and quantitative assessment of technologies to improve energy efficiency or reduce greenhouse gas emissions in households, commerce and industry and the development of appropriate measures in these sectors. Strategic heat planning and decarbonisation of industry are further research priorities. He studied industrial engineering and management at the University of Duisburg-Essen with a focus on energy and process engineering, where he graduated in 2010 with a master’s thesis on solar thermal power plants.

Chris Bataille has been involved in energy and climate policy analysis for 26 years as a researcher, energy systems and economic modeller, analyst, writer, project manager, and founding partner. His career has been focused on the transition to a globally sustainable energy system, more recently technology and policy pathways to net-zero GHG emissions by all sectors by 2050-‘70 to meet the Paris Agreement goals. He is an Associate Researcher at the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI.org) in Paris working on the Deep Decarbonization Pathways project (DDPinitiative.org), and an Adjunct Professor at Simon Fraser University. Chris was a Lead Author for the Industry Chapter of the 6th cycle of the IPCC Assessment Report 2019-2022, as well as the Summary for Policy Makers and Technical Summary.

Hans Böhm completed his bachelor and master studies in mechanical engineering at Graz University of Technology. He graduated in 2015 with a focus on energy technology and motor and drive technology. After working for one year as a development engineer for refrigeration appliances, he started working as a researcher at the Energy Technology Department of the Energy Institute of the Johannes Kepler University. His research focuses on the techno-economic assessment of emerging technologies and processes for the storage and conversion of renewable energy sources. His expertise is in the field of renewable hydrogen technologies and power-to-x processes as well as carbon capture and utilisation (CCU). He completed his PhD in 2022 as an external PhD student at the Department of Process Engineering and Industrial Environmental Protection at the University of Leoben. His dissertation dealt with the techno-economic assessment of emerging power-to-gas technologies using advanced generic methods.

Dr. Ivan Kantor has recently joined the department of chemical and materials Engineering at Concordia university. His educational background in Chemical Engineering formed the basis for optimization-based approaches focusing on industrial energy efficiency, circular economy, sustainability, and energy systems. The research objectives of this work are focused on developing methods to solve complex problems and proposing novel solutions using systematic and holistic approaches to capture all important aspects for a problem. A spatially explicit view on a low carbon European industry
Joris Valee obtained a Master degree in wind power development at Uppsala University, Sweden 2019 and holds two Bachelor’s degrees in applied computer science, Belgium-Finland 1999 and in embedded software, The Netherlands 2001. During his education, he gathered experience in the areas of system analysis, machine automation, wind resource analysis, Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) and energy modelling. He Joined VITO on August 15th 2020 as a researcher in energy systems. Joris is involved various industrial energy system modelling projects such as in the PROCURA project which aims to create a Power-to-x and carbon capture roadmap for Belgium. For this project, he will be building up storylines including cost calculations, emission impact, new technologies and TIMES modeling for hard to abate heavy industries such as the petrochemical and steel sectors among others. Other projects Joris is leading are the EU AIDRES project, a low carbon industrial spatially explicit database and the CIREC Project, which aims to assess security of supply risks related to renewable energy roadmaps in Belgium and scarcity of critical materials. Prior to his work at VITO, he obtained industry knowledge by working as a project manager in a large Swedish-Belgian industrial machinery organization as a project manager in IT automation and infrastructure.

Marija Saric is a chemical process engineer that specialises in the conceptual design and techno-economic evaluation of energy conversion processes. She has a master degree in Chemical Engineering and completed a two-year post-master course in chemical design engineering from Twente University. Throughout her career she worked on the technical, energetic and economic and LCA assessment of energy conversion systems and modelling thereof using flow sheeting software, evaluating a large range of technologies such as electrolysis for different applications, membrane reactors and separators for H2 and CO2, Taylor flow reactors , Heat Integrated Distillation Column (HIDiC), CO2 capture and utilization, (bio)gas treatment and separation technologies in the waste water treatment and biorefineries.

Decarbonization of cement industry – CLEANKER project results
Maurizio Spinelli is a Research Leader at LEAP, Laboratory of Energy and Environment Piacenza (Low Carbon Technologies area). He studied and worked in Politecnico di Milano (IT), where he obtained a PhD in Energy & Nuclear Science and Technology, by defending the thesis: “Advanced technologies for CO2 capture and power generation in cement plant”. Much of his research activity has been on studying, ideating and modelling carbon capture and storage processes (CCS), especially based on Calcium Looping (CaL) and Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells (MCFC). Since 2011 he has been working as a technical consultant in relevant projects on CCS technologies commissioned by several companies of the power, cement, steel and oil & gas sectors. He modeled and analysed Ca-Looping systems for CO2 capture in cement plants for the EU projects CEMCAP, CLEANKER, LEILAC, Calby2030. From 2021, he is Co-PI for the HySteel – DOE project focused on the use of green/blue hydrogen technologies for the decarbonisation of the steel industry. From 2023, he is the coordinator of HERCCULES, a Horizon Europe project focused on the demonstration of the full CCUS chain in southern Europe.

From 1997 to 2002, he worked as a Research Engineer at the University of Liège, where he pioneered several applications of machine learning in industry such as automated quality control for the ophthalmic industry, anomaly detection in large electrical power systems, and process and product optimisation in the steel industry. He also published several articles in the field of applied artificial intelligence in manufacturing.
In 2002, he founded PEPITe with the aim to provide no-code AI solutions for the manufacturing industry. With more than 20 years of experience, PEPITe has successfully deployed scalable and sustainable AI solutions across a range of industries including chemicals, oil and gas, cement, pulp and paper, metals and minerals, etc. He is currently advising industries on how to implement AI to increase their profitability together with their environmental sustainability.
Dr Piera Patrizio

Opportunities and Challenges of BECCS in Industry: comparison with alternative decarbonization pathways
Dr Patrizio is the Head of Research at the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) and Guest Associate at the Centre for Environmental Policy (CEP) at Imperial College London. She has a decade’s experience as energy systems modeler, with a special focus on the integration of carbon dioxide removal technologies in existing energy systems.
Prior to joining SBTi, she led the development of the MONET model for a range of CO2 removal pathways for the UK and the EU, to quantify the socio-economic and ecosystems trade-offs associated with their implementation in a Net Zero context.
Before joining Imperial College, Piera held a Research Scholar position at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA, Austria) with whom she continues to collaborate.

Pieter Lodewijks obtained his masters degree in Biology and additional masters in Environmental Technology Engineering at KULeuven. He started to work at VITO/EnergyVille as a Energy/Climate modeller and has worked for 20 years at VITO. Since the last 10 years he is program manager of a research team developing long-term techno-economic optimization models at VITO/EnergyVille with a strong focus on the industrial transformation towards net-zero. Simon Harvey holds a Professor position at the Division of Energy Technology at Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, Sweden. His research is related to the development of methods and tools (conceptual process design, process integration, process modelling and simulation) to support transition towards resource-efficient and flexible industrial processes. The major focus is on early-stage techno-economic and sustainability assessment of the potential benefits of renewable feedstocks, energy efficiency and GHG emissions reduction measures in industrial processes and industrial clusters.

Stefan Lechtenböhmer is the director of the “Future Energy and Industry Systems” research division at the Wuppertal Institute. He is also Adjunct Professor at the Department for Technology and Society / Environment and Energy Systems at Lund University and a member of the UNFCCC Roster of Experts for GHG-Inventories, Policies & Measures, GHG-Projections. His research focus includes Transformation to a climate-neutral basic material industry, Energy and climate policy (especially at national and subnational level) and Long-term scenarios of a low-carbon society. He studied Geography and Economics at the Universities of Münster, Hagen and Wuppertal.

Thokozani Majozi is the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. He is also a professor in the School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering, where he also holds a NRF/DST Chair in Sustainable Process Engineering. He was also an associate professor in computer science at the University of Pannonia in Hungary from 2005 to 2009. Majozi was a Commonwealth Scholar at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology in the United Kingdom where he completed his PhD in Process Integration. Majozi is author and co-author of more than 200 scientific publications, including 4 books in Batch Chemical Process Integration. Majozi is also a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (UK), and a registered Chartered Engineer. His area of expertise is process systems engineering, with a focus on sustainable chemical process design.

Thomas was a founding staff member of the IIIEE at Lund University in 1995 and part of the ESS-S team that won the European Spallation Source investment for Sweden. Thomas holds a MSc in engineering physics and a PhD in environmental management and strategy. Thomas founded WA3RM together with Fredrik Indebetou and Michael Wieigert in 2015. WA3RM develops and finances industrial-scale circular businesses.
Valerie Rodin

Valerie Rodin MSc has a background in eco-energy engineering. In 2018, she joined the Energieinstitut an der Johannes Kepler Universität Linz and has been working in an interdisciplinary team since then. She is a Senior Researcher in the Department of Energy Technology with a thematic focus on industrial energy cooperation, industrial symbiosis and carbon capture and utilization (CCU). Her methodological focus is on life cycle, potential and techno-economic analyses as well as qualitative facilitation of industrial symbiosis projects. Furthermore, she is an external PhD student at the Institute for Chemical Technology of Organic Materials (CTO) at the JKU Linz and works in cooperation with the Energieinstitut on assessment methods for CCU processes in the context of circular economy and industrial symbiosis.
