Decarbonisation scenarios for heavy industry sectors
Thursday 11 May 2023, 14h – 17 h
Venue: Palmstedtssalen, Chalmers Conference Centre and Online (please contact elliot.mari@ademe.fr for access)
Heavy industry sectors (mainly steel, cement and chemicals) that supply the most basic materials for modern lifestyle and infrastructures, are responsible for 45% of total energy system emissions. The decarbonisation of these sectors is thus critical to align with the Paris targets but also a complex challenge. Heavy industries have gained increasing attention over the past decade in the climate agenda as illustrated by the number of scenario analysis and roadmaps they have been dedicated. Such scenarios take place at multiple scales (national, regional, international) and can be conducted by different actors. This side-event session will present some recent findings on decarbonisation scenarios for heavy industry sectors and will be the opportunity to discuss driving forces, scenario archetypes and methodologies.
Confirmed speakers:
- Petrochemical industry : Ylva Kloo (Wuppertal Institute) – “Towards a Net-Zero Chemical Industry – A Meta-Analysis of Recent Scenario Studies and Roadmaps”
- Ammonia industry : Antoine Deswazière (ADEME) – “Transitions pathways for ammonia deep decarbonization : a case study of France”
- Steel industry : Chris Bataille (IDDRI, Columbia University) – “Facility level, global pathways to net-zero GHG steel”
- Cement industry : Elliot Mari (ADEME) – “Transformation of value chains and business models for a low-carbon cement industry”
This session is open and free of charge.
